NEW YORK REVIEW
No doubt what this Alfie is all about—Jude Law’s charm, squandered in every frame of this gummy remake. Talking to the camera with knowing impishness cannot redeem an Alfie who says he’s in it for the “FBB”-“face, boobs, and bum”-of women ranging from Marisa Tomei (looking bored out of her skull) to Susan Sarandon (as a cruel parody of the truly sexy women she played in Atlantic City and Bull Durham). Director Shyer, who specializes in glossy, maudlin updates (Father of the Bride, The Parent Trap), maintains a tedious rhythm: Alfie charms ’em, beds ’em, leaves ’em, then asks for sympathy. Instead, we despise him. And for accompaniment, we get Mick Jagger squawking so listlessly, he sounds stricken with Lyme disease. Reviewed by Ken Tucker, New York Magazine
