NEW YORK REVIEW
One’s heart goes out to Nicole Kidman in Birth. Not only is she confronted by an exceedingly unpleasant little boy (I’m sure you’re actually a nice kid, Cameron Bright) who claims to be the reincarnation of her dead husband—just when she’s about to get re-hitched, to a pleasantly oily Danny Huston—but Kidman is also laboring under a tremendously unflattering pixie cut that makes her look like Mary Martin on a bad Peter Pan hair day. After the brilliance of Sexy Beast, director Jonathan Glazer apparently felt the need to prove his range by making a humorless, sallow movie shot in big, dark, old Manhattan apartments. Thank God Lauren Bacall is around (as Nicole’s mum) to autocritique Birth just by glaring at everyone. Bacall’s arched eyebrows and sour grimace seem to say, “What are you people gassing on about? Wrap up this nonsense so this skinny Kidman girl can let her hair grow out!” Reviewed by Ken Tucker, New York Magazine
