NEW YORK REVIEW
Director Roger Michell has let the air out of Ian McEwan’s billowy novel about the aftermath of a tragic hot-air balloon accident. Daniel Craig is artful at portraying the protagonist, Joe, and showing the subtle gradations of guilt he suffers after he and a group of strangers fail to save a man who crashes in a runaway balloon. It’s difficult to portray a quiet intellectual engagingly, and this is the film’s primary achievement. But the filmmakers (Joe Penhall adapted the book) make a botch of Jed (Rhys Ifans), a rescuer turned stalker. Michell used Ifans in Notting Hill as a cheerful nutcase; here, trying to make those qualities menacing—and, worse, inextricably tied to his character’s homosexuality—Ifans is repellent to no discernable purpose.
