NEW YORK VIEW
Andrew Neel's documentary about the fascinating life of his grandmother, downtown "collector of souls" Alice Neel, is an engrossing study, especially for those interested in the New York art scene. A tirelessly dedicated portrait artist who worked in an era when the form was considered déclassé, Neel painted everyone from Andy Warhol and local immigrants, all the while scraping out an existence living on the dole as a single mother of two. Neel is an elusive, complicated subject, and the hardships that made her life so difficult make for a compelling, if sad, historical collage.
