NEW YORK VIEW
Anime legend Satoshi Kon is one of cinema's few originals, so why is this silly dreamscape so clichéd? The problem starts with a premise—a dream detective who explores other people's sleep to solve crimes—has been done to death, in umpteen Freddy movies and films like The Cell. The worst part is the surprisingly derivative visuals: After the restrained palette of Tokyo Godfathers, these overblown flourishes are a mishmash of ice-cream pastels and neon lights, messy as a carnival concessions stand.

CINEMASOURCE SYNOPSIS
A machine allows therapists to enter patients' dreams. When it's stolen, all hell breaks loose, and only a woman therapist (nicknamed "Paprika") seems able to stop it.
