NEW YORK VIEW
Olivier Meyrou's artful, if at times glacial, documentary about the aftermath and trial of a grisly gay-bashing incident in France focuses primarily on extended scenes of the victim's family as they ponder the horror of their loss and, eventually, how to redeem the perpetrators. In stripping the story of its details and in refusing to provide much context, Meyrou reduces his topic to the point of abstraction—which may well be the point, but also feels a bit like a cop-out.
CINEMASOURCE SYNOPSIS After their gay son, François Chenu, is beaten to death by 3 skinheads, a close-knit French family tries to move toward understanding and even forgiveness so that their fight for tolerance and respect for others can continue. Director Olivier Meyrou crafts this devestating documentary in classic verité style, allowing an immensely cathartic story to unfold at its own pace without unnecessary exposition or narration.
