NEW YORK VIEW
Volker Schlöndorff's historical drama focuses on a working-class divorced woman (Katharina Thalbach) who organizes her fellow laborers into revolt (a move that launches the famed Solidarity movement in Poland) after a tragic explosion at the shipyard where they work. Dominique Horwitz co-stars.
CINEMASOURCE SYNOPSIS Agnieszka, a welder, is a loyal and dedicated worker and a perennial "Heroine of Labor." Taunted by her peers for being such a paragon of virtue, she nonetheless advocates tirelessly for workers' rights without much reward. Living alone with her teenaged son, she spends her days on endless, repetitive tasks, but a glimmer of joy arrives when a happy-go-lucky, trumpet-playing newcomer takes an apartment in her block and the two start a relationship.
