NEW YORK VIEW
Molly Shannon stars in this odd film as an unstimulated secretary who, after her beloved dog dies, transforms her love for animals into a full-blown obsession. She's a decent dramatic actor, but she plays it a bit flat, and director Mike White has a hard time pulling off the difficult mix of tones. Funny turns from Laura Dern, as an undermining neighbor, and John C. Reilly, as a brief love interest, pick things up a bit, but for most of the film it's hard to know whether you're meant to laugh or feel stricken by the depressing reality of it all.
