This illicit German silent from 1928 bristles with the bobbed-hair naughtiness of Louise Brooks, who shimmies and shivers as the very best bad girl in Weimar Berlin. As Lulu, Brooks hopscotches from one sort of exploitation to another, as she’s kept by rich men, nearly sold into sex slavery, employed as a street prostitute, and crowned as a showstopping showgirl. A gal like that could only survive by being as wily as she was sexy, but then again, Brooks never apologized for being gorgeous—or for being as smart as she was.
