The facts: Two 15-year-old prep-school students who talk hip-hop, dress baggy, and strive hard to be accepted by the teenage "crews" from the projects, are arrested after affable 44-year-old real-estate salesman Michael Morrow is stabbed 34 times and disembowled with a hunting knife in Central Park.

Ugly details: "Daphne told police that she and Chris mutiliated the body, cutting off the dead man's nose and almost severing a hand in an apparent attempt to hide his identity," Nancy Jo Sales wrote in New York. "They tried to sink McMorrow's 220-pound frame in the park's lake, gutting it first, Daphne told police, 'because he was a fatty.' "

The sentence: 3 to 10 years in prison.
