P.R.
Crisis, Part I: Christian Curry, an analyst
who was fired after he appeared nude in a gay porn
magazine, sued Morgan Stanley for $1.78 billion,
alleging that he was fired for his race and for
the photos. The company denied the charges but subsequently
settled the case after admitting it had paid an
investigator to gather damaging information about
Curry. One of Purcell's confidants, counsel Christine
Edwards, was fired as a result.
P.R. Crisis, Part II: Last February, Purcell
got himself into hot
water on both sides of the political fence by
inviting Bill Clinton to speak at a Morgan
Stanley conference, then by sending an e-mail to
clients calling the invitation "a mistake."
Ride 'em, cowboy: In February, The New
York Times compared Purcell to Machiavelli for
his "take-no-prisoners style." Barrons'
June story on a potential MSDW-American Express
merger called Purcell a "kind of Wyatt Earp of Wall
Street," alluding to his Utah roots and Western-themed
office accents.
The softer side of Phil: The 57-year-old
father of seven sons and husband to Anne commutes
back to Wilmette, Ill. rather than uprooting his
family.
