Mogul
mystic? Redstone was seen in June wearing red
thread tied to his left wrist, given him by an L.A.
rabbi. "The theory is it will ward off all evil,"
he told the New
York Daily News. "I'm not necessarily believing
that that's true, but what have I got to lose?"
Not reported on any Viacom channels: At 78,
Redstone's love life vies even with his acquisition
of CBS for media attention. Wife Phyllis was married
to Redstone for 53 years before asking for a $3
billion settlement, and the tabloids chronicled
various of his subsequent relationships with relish.
But none of the women mentioned will ever supplant
Redstone's true love: "Viacom is me. I am Viacom.
That marriage is eternal, forever," he has said.
All of which suggests a time frame for his retirement
that is not going to make Mel Karmazin, Viacom’s
ambitious number two, very happy.
Win words: Redstone's autobiography,
published in June, is appropriately titled A
Passion to Win.
First gig: Redstone received a degree from
Harvard Law and practiced law for six years before
taking over his father's movie theater business.
