Shape up to ship out: The USS Kearsarge, a 27,000-ton aircraft carrier, launches from the Brooklyn Navy Yard. To finish the war in the Pacific, workers kept churning out warships even as the tide turned in Europe. Another aircraft carrier had just been launched the week before.
