Called, simply, Museum, this abandoned eight-by-eight-foot freight elevator, open to Cortlandt Alley in Tribeca, is the brainchild of filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie and Alex Kalman (of Red Bucket Films). The space, which fits, at most, three people, contains a meticulously curated selection of over 150 wacky objects and objéts, like industrial designer Tucker Viemeister’s collection of toothpaste tubes, the shoe that was thrown at George W. Bush, and a hotel key found at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The nonprofit museum opened over the summer with funding courtesy of the Spade family, and a Rudolph Giuliani impersonator led a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Next year’s round of exhibits will feature, among other things, the personal ephemera of Screw magazine’s fallen founder Al Goldstein and a collection of fake vomit from around the world.
