Go Ask Alice: Roi dictates what the fashion crew will be wearing next.

Alice Roi

The Look Back to the '80s: low-waist trousers, ruffled blouses. Some of Roi's pieces can be hyper-feminine, but when they are, the designer's tongue is usually planted firmly in cheek.

Career Trajectory The young designer's must-have gear helped earn her a nomination, along with winner Bruce, for a CFDA award this year. Roi presented her first formal show last February, punctuating it with '80s-style off-the-shoulder tops and miniskirts.

What You Don't Know Roi, whose family runs the Inn at Irving Plaza, changed her name from Alice Roy Blumenthal to her more European nom de design, which means "king" in French. The designer wryly explained the shift in moniker to the New York Observer: "I'm a princess, but I can be king."

What the Editors Say
Cosmopolitan, Alexandra Douglass:
"For me, the fall shows were all about Alice Roi... She had a vision that no one else had."

Hint, Melissa de la Cruz: "You can tell a designer is hot when their sample sale is overrun by editors elbowing each other out of the way."
