Kathryn Hahn in Afternoon Delight

There was a moment five days into shooting Afternoon Delight where I was watching Kathryn [Hahn] and Juno [Temple] doing a scene and I finally got what directing was. I was watching them do a scene and I was feeling things and coming up with new ideas and adjusting the scene based on the relationship between what they were doing and my feelings. So I was playing with them as a director in the same way that two actors play with each other. I whispered something in Juno’s ear, like, “Pretend that your mom just came to set to visit you.” And I whispered something else to Kathryn. Something about falling in love with her. Then I went to the monitor and saw how I was changing them. That’s when I realized what directing was. The scene changes before your very eyes.
