Forget those ubiquitous DAN SMITH WILL TEACH YOU GUITAR! posters. Cheap flyers were recently spotted in Park Slope advertising JOHN MAYER WILL TEACH YOU GUITAR! There’s an awkward picture of the rocker, and dorky text reading, “In a crazy world where managing time is harder than ever, trust John Mayer to be there to instruct you to express yourself with the magic of music.” The tabs have a phone number that goes to a recording of Mayer (yes, it’s really him) thanking the caller for his interest in guitar lessons. However, no actual lessons will be given. Mayer’s publicist was surprised to learn about the DIY marketing campaign, but later confirmed that the flyers, created to put the word out about Mayer’s new album, Continuum, are the brainchild of Mayer and his managers, who were seeking to speak to fellow New Yorkers with their insidery gag. “John and his management team are hilarious!” says the rep. The voice-mail box is full.
