How did Calvin Klein and Donna Karan spend their summer vacations? Trekking through Ethiopia, Botswana, and Kenya for three weeks together. It was Karan’s idea. “We were sitting around discussing our summer plans, and I said, ‘I’m going to Africa. Why don’t you come?’” she says. “We had so much fun.” Karan’s shop Urban Zen showcases unique jewelry from around the world, and she picked up some pieces on the trip. (“Because of her connections, they were able to go into villages tourists wouldn’t normally get into,” confides an employee at Urban Zen in Sag Harbor.) Klein brought his camera. “I was shooting these wonderful tribes in Ethiopia,” he says. “I’ve got some great shots.”
