“This is a really weird thing, isn’t it?” asked Zach Braff, motioning to the roomful of tipsy revelers who had stood in a long line along Tenth Avenue in the rain for an event called “The Darker Side of Green,” a Sarah Silverman–moderated debate about global warming. “It’s like, ‘Let’s give everyone tequila and then try to have this serious debate.’ It just makes no sense.” It was also a party for the Lexus CT 200h “premium compact hybrid.” Maggie Gyllenhaal said she had come at the urging of her composting husband, Peter Sarsgaard, who instructed her to “Find out about that car!” Closer to the stage, hecklers booed and made farting noises whenever Phelim McAleer, a global-warming skeptic, got his turn to rebut points by author Amanda Little. Silverman did her best to settle the rowdy crowd by screaming, “Shut the fuck up! I hate you guys right now!”
