Those Empty Summer Nights

On Saturdays, there are always a couple of lights on, but the majority are out. Traffic is free flowing, there’s no gridlock, and believe it or not, there’s a lot of parking. I can actually stand out here and enjoy the weather. I don’t have to be on point as much. They’re on vacation; I’m on vacation. It’s good for the blood pressure. If I have a cup of coffee, or if I have a cigarette out here, I’m not going to get in trouble for it. A lot of people come back during the week, but a lot of the wives are gone. During the week, about 40 percent are away, but Thursday, Friday, it’s going to be down to, like, 10 percent here. —Dan, a doorman at a Park Avenue apartment building, as told to Katie van Syckle
