Mom's the Word

It's not too late to show her you care this Sunday.

1. Does mom like partying like it's 1879? Take her to a Victorian garden party at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden, an authentic turn-of-the-century fête with finger food and games like Game of Graces, Battledore, and Shuttlecock (we had to look them up too).

2. Or maybe she's a fan of fuzzy cute things. At the Central Park Zoo Mother’s Day Celebration, a $75 ticket covers Mom and a child (ages 3 to 10) to meet animal moms and babies, participate in a scavenger hunt, make crafts, and eat treats. (Tickets are sold out, but there is a wait list.)

3. Has Mom always wanted to make pasta from scratch? Take her to a class at Aunt Jake’s in Little Italy and their newly minted Pasta Lab, where for only $25 you’ll get down and dirty with executive chef Carmine Di Giovanni while learning how to make a variety of styles of pasta. Classes happen three days a week, so there's plenty of opportunity if you can't make it this weekend.

4. Or let Mom roam free and discover new cuisine to cook at the Food Book Fair this weekend, with author signings, a guest-chef dinner, speakers, and more. It runs Thursday through Sunday.

5. You know what moms love? Chocolate. Even better is chocolate for a good cause, as with L.A. Burdick’s chocolate elephants, which benefit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Available in stores and online, they're hand-piped, hand-dipped, hand-painted, and adorable.

6. And what better to pair that chocolate with than some booze, also for a cause. Take Mom out to Coup, Ravi DeRossi's new bar on Astor Place, where you'll buy an excellent cocktail for $20 (tax and tip included), with 100 percent of the profits going to a cause of your choice. Get Mom two or three of those while you're at it.

7. We could all use a massage. And with Haven Spa's three-hour Mommy & Me package ($460), you can both get in on the action with a Swedish massage followed by a facial and a European manicure and pedicure. They've also recently introduced "Facialates" (think face Pilates), a new anti-aging facial for the mom that would rather stay away from needles or surgery. That one's $245.

8. Celebrate with the magic of nature at the New York Botanic Garden Mother's Day Weekend Garden Party this Friday and Saturday. Come for the music, tours, and games, and stay for the stunning glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly currently on exhibit.

9. Sunday at the Central Park Bandshell is Japan Day. Admission is free. There'll be folk dancing, musical performances, and multiple tents with activities like origami, face painting, and calligraphy. And, of course, food.

10. How about a show? At City Winery, see mother-daughter singer-songwriter pair Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche with guests Dar Williams, Loudon Wainwright III, and Julie Gold.

11. And at Lincoln Center, Justin Peck teams up with Sufjan Stevens for another world premiere in the New York City Ballet's HERE/NOW No. 8. There's a performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

12. They're kicking off festivities early on Friday night at Barclays Center with the Mother's Day Good Music Festival with Tyrese, Anthony Hamilton, KEM, and Brandy.

13. And on Sunday at 54 Below is A Very Broadway Mother's Day, where leading ladies from the Broadway and cabaret stage share the spotlight with their offspring for a brunch show.

14. If your mom is still into existentialism, she'll love Dianne Wiest in Samuel Beckett's Happy Days at the Theatre for a New Audience in Brooklyn. The show on Sunday is followed by a conversation.

15. And this weekend is your last chance to catch mom faves Mark Ruffalo, Tony Shalhoub, and Danny DeVito in Arthur Miller's The Price on Broadway. Heck, who are we kidding? They're everybody's faves.
