Weekend Agenda

Events to check out this holiday weekend, May 25–29.

If you see a sailor, say hello.

1. Kick off the weekend with some laughs at the season finale of Catie Lazarus’s Employee of the Month comedy talk show. It's a doozy of a lineup, with Edie Falco, Keegan-Michael Key, and Bradley Whitford.

2. And while you’re looking for comedy, swing by the newly reopened basement of Union Hall for shows including "Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction" (!) on Friday, "Literati: A Comedy Show About the Greatest American Novels Never Written" on Saturday, and "Dark Spots" on Sunday, where comedians perform their darkest, saddest, and most traumatic material. Fun!

3. It’s Fleet Week! Which means tons of free events celebrating the U.S. Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. Take a tour of a ship, stop by Times Square to see divers do demonstrations, check out Coast Guard drill-team performances, and much more. And don't forget: If you see a sailor, say hello.

4. And if you’ve ever wanted to swing-dance on a flight deck, tickets are still left for the Battle of the Big Bands on the Intrepid, also part of Fleet Week. Come dressed to impress with your dancing shoes on for performances from groups including the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra and Jason Prover’s Sneak Thievery Orchestra, beginner classes, dance performances, and costume competitions.

5. Last year, Australian postpunk legend Nick Cave returned with Skeleton Tree. It was followed this month by Lovely Creatures: The Best of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a retrospective compilation spanning 30 years. See him plumb his repertoire with the Bad Seeds this Friday and Saturday at King's Theater.

6. While on Thursday and Friday, pioneering rockers the Pixies are at Brooklyn Steel. Make it an OG weekend.

7. This Friday, the pool at the William Vale hotel launches a day pass open to the public. Grab some friends and reserve your cabanas ahead of time here.

8. Also in Williamsburg: the free outdoor Summer Thunder concert series at Union Pool, which kicks off this Saturday at 2 p.m. with Psychic Ills and Blazer Sound System.

9. See the remarkable Obie-winning and Tony-nominated play Oslo at Lincoln Center Theater.

10. And Dance Africa, the largest festival of its kind, is at BAM through Monday with films, performances, classes, and a bazaar with crafts, food, and clothing.

11. Rooftop films kicks off the season on Saturday with The Genius and the Opera Singer, followed by a Q&A with director Vanessa Stockley.

12. And Saturday at Joe’s Pub are Taiwanese musicians Sean Huang, Gina Can, Biung & Treya, in conjunction with Sunday's Taiwan festival in Union Square, celebrating the nation's music, food, drink, and more. Take a trip without leaving New York.

13. The Vision Festival kicks off on Monday with free jazz, dance, poetry, and visual art. This year the festival honors pianist and instrument designer Cooper-Moore, who also performs.

14. And if you want to eat and drink your way through the long weekend, we’ve got you covered. Head down to Coney Island to the newly reopened Feltman’s, named for Charles Feltman, the inventor of the hot dog, and check out our roundup of the best places in town to stuff your face.

15. Monday at Riverside Park is the annual Memorial Day commemoration at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, with a procession led by the New York Scottish Pipes and Drums, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in period uniforms, and the Veteran Corps of Artillery.

16. At Lincoln Center is the Memorial Day With Strength & Joy concert, featuring performance of Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and a new work by Pepper Choplin.

17. The New York Philharmonic performs a free concert of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 on Monday, at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Tickets are first come, first served, but if the weather’s nice they’ll pipe the music outside.

18. And at Green-Wood Cemetery is their annual free concert of the ISO Symphonic Band, featuring works by Green-Wood residents Fred Ebb, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Leonard Bernstein, and more. They’ll also be offering special Memorial Day–themed walking and trolley tours immediately after the concert. Don't forget your blanket, and have a happy weekend!
