Events to catch this weekend, 8/24–8/27.


Solange performs at this weekend's Afropunk Fest.   

1. This weekend wraps up the Brooklyn Comedy Festival, offering the best of the borough, with Sasheer Zamata, Nore Davis, Janelle James, Aparna Nancherla, and more, plus free events and a film festival.

2. At Green-Wood Cemetery on Saturday is the Battle of Brooklyn. There’s an evening campfire event with dance demonstrations, 18th-century food, and storytelling. Children under 5 can participate for free.

3. The U.S. Open starts next Monday! Get in the spirit early with the U.S. Open Experience at the South Street Seaport, a free festival on Thursday and Friday with food tastings, ticket giveaways, autograph sessions with tennis pros, demonstrations, and more, including music and entertainment.

4. While Saturday is the annual Arthur Ashe Kids Day, a day of tennis appreciation for kids of all ages, with free activities including autographs and face-painting on the grounds; a ticketed stadium show, with showcases this year by tennis superstars Venus Williams and Roger Federer; plus musical performances by Sofia Carson, star of Disney’s Descendants franchise, pop sensations Jack & Jack, singer-songwriter-musician Alex Aiono, and more.

5. This weekend is the Afropunk Fest, two days of art installations, skate competitions, and performances from artists including Solange, Raphael Saadiq, Sza, Michael Kiwanuka, Thundercat, and Macy Gray.

6. And it’s also the free Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, beginning Thursday at Marcus Garvey Park with Emmy-winning dancer Jason Smith’s “Chasin’ the Bird Remixed.” On Friday is Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen and her nine-piece band; Saturday has performances from ’80s all-star saxophonist Lee Konitz, politically engaged band Social Science, singer Charenee Wade, and 80-year-old hard bop legend Louis Hayes; and at Tompkins Square Park on Sunday is the Joshua Redman Quartet, saxophonist and Berklee professor Tia Fuller, Alicia Olatuja (who sang at the second Obama inauguration), and NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson.

7. Catch the Tony-nominated Groundhog Day on Broadway before it goes back in its hole on September 17.

8. And if you’ve ever wanted a golden throne, hurry to the Guggenheim. Maurizio Cattelan’s America, a.k.a. the functioning toilet cast in 18-karat gold, is being removed on September 15.

9. On Saturday at Governors Island, the Billion Oyster Project presents the end of summer shuck-off. Learn how to shuck oysters and enter a competition. While you’re there, get educated about Billion Oyster Project and New York Harbor School’s efforts to restore the harbor.

10. And this weekend concludes the Central Park Conservancy Film Festival. Grab some popcorn for Saturday Night Fever on Thursday, The Godfather on Friday, and Spider-Man 3 on Saturday. Don’t forget the bug spray, and happy weekend!
