Events to check out this weekend, July 10–12.


See comedian Seaton Smith for free this Sunday in Washington Square Park.   

1.Have you checked out our roundup of free events? There's lots to see gratis this weekend, including a New Pornographers show on Saturday and Laughter in the Park on Sunday with Seaton Smith (Mulaney), Arthur Meyer (Late Night With Jimmy Fallon), and more.

2. Head to Queens on Saturday for another free event, this time literary, when writers from the borough read their works at Socrates Park. While you’re there, check out the park’s summer exhibitions (also free).

3. The Lincoln Center Festival is currently happening, and through the 12th, you can see (and hear) a concert of suites by Danny Elfman, from the films of Tim Burton. Watch out for costumed audience members. Or, hey, be one of them yourself.

4. Over at Bowery Ballroom, catch stalwarts Mates of States, or head to MSG for a double dose of Dispatch on Friday and Saturday, with shows spotlighting the issue of hunger. Notably, Dr. Dog opens on Friday.

5. This Saturday and Sunday, see some vintage buses from the New York Transit Museum on Governors Island …

6. Or check out some cool vintage kicks at the Brooklyn Museum. On Friday, the exhibit “The Rise of Sneaker Culture” opens.

7. Through Saturday, the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival celebrates the culture of hip-hop in several locations, culminating in a concert at 50 Kent featuring Common and Mobb Deep.

8. While over in Manhattan on Saturday, the first ticketed Village Voice 4 Knots Festival rocks Pier 84 with a lineup including Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Screaming Females, and Twin Peaks.

9. Kevin Hart has played quite a few dates around here lately (including two shows tonight at Barclays Center), but if you missed them all, try Newark this weekend, as he’ll be at the Prudential Center for two shows on Saturday.

10. Or stay close to home: Ron Funches (Undateable) is at Carolines from Thursday through Sunday. Happy weekend!
