Your Weekend Agenda

Events to check out this Fourth of July weekend.

George Clinton apparently has given up his dreadlocks.

1. It’s the long weekend! Kick it off with a boom at Coney Island, with its summer-long weekly fireworks spectacular. Friday-night fireworks begin at 9:30, but beforehand, hit the boardwalk for some free karaoke. Here’s a list of songs to choose from. (And for a list of where to watch Macy’s fireworks on Saturday, see our list here.)

2. From Thursday through Sunday at Commodore Barry Park is the International African Arts Festival, with activities including crafts, a natural-hair show and barber competition, a talent show, and performances by Talib Kweli and Living Colour. It’s all free, with a suggested donation of $5.

3. Head to Governors Island on Friday for Governors Club Funk-N’-Cue featuring George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. It’s funk, plus barbecue. What more could you want?

4. Or visit Bowery Ballroom for married indie-pop duo Mates of State, who recently released the EP You’re Going to Make It.

5. Saturday’s the big day! Head back to Coney Island in the morning for the Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest. We’d say check out the new Wahlburgerswhile you’re there, but really, the weekend’s all about hot dogs.

6. Dance off those hot dogs at PS1’s Warm Up, which this year lands on the holiday and features Nicky Siano, Virgo Four, Cut Copy DJs, and more.

7. Or go dancing at night at Minton’s in Harlem. At its Liberation Swing Dance, get a dance lesson from 8 to 9 p.m. For $25 or $40 VIP (includes two cocktails), choose from a menu of Southern Revival cuisine. Then, more dancing. Because there’s lots to celebrate!

8. On Randalls Island, all are welcome to explore the Urban Farm for free from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s fun for the whole family.

8. Or head to the Freedom Festival at the Intrepid, where Queen Latifah, Will Hoge, and Amy Schumer put on a show to benefit the museum and its Fallen Hero Fund. This one’s not so family-friendly, but there is an open bar with beer and wine.

10. Looking for some free comedy? On Sunday, attend the inaugural Laughter in the Park at Mineral Springs in Central Park. Alongside established names like Eddie Brill and Damien Lemon is New York City Parks commissioner Mitchell J. Silver making his comedy debut. Everybody’s a comedian.

11. Or see a free outdoor performance of The Tempest, presented by the Classical Theater of Harlem. The run begins on Sunday and goes through July 26. Happy weekend!
