Summer Benefit

Watermill Center. July 28, 2007. By Jada Yuan

How do you know Robert Wilson? “We did a ballet with him called Tulips and Dancers in Space. The costumes we designed were pretty restrictive, and he had already done the choreography. When he saw the costumes, he said, ‘These are great. I’ll just have to change the dance.’” —Rolf Snoeren (with Viktor Horsting)

What was your hardest shoot? “The Playboy cover. The lighting is so intense, and you’re holding these really unnatural body shapes and sucking it all in to make your body look sexy. I couldn’t walk for days afterwards.” —Dita Von Teese

Tinsley Mortimer

How’d you get the panther in your video portrait to stay so still? “It’s the other way around. When you’re shooting a panther, unchained, in a studio, for over an hour, no one can move. You have to be very still. You become that panther.” —Robert Wilson

You're wearing a Michael Jackson pin. “I love him. I think he is a bit tragic. He lies between love and hate. I think his story is like one of the heroes from Shakespeare, like Hamlet. He is Charlie Chaplin, loved outside of America.” —Andrey Bartenev

Jessica Joffe

Do you visit the buildings you donated to the town of East Hampton? “Oh, yes. You can see the proportion and the simplicity and the perfection of them, which you tend to miss when people are walking in and carrying kitchen equipment.” —Addie de Menil

Billy Norwich

What’s next after all-glass buildings? “No windows at all! No walls! Just open air.” —Richard Meier

Jessica Craig Martin

Do you tend to wear less makeup at the beach? “Oh, honey, don’t even go there with me. I use a spatula always.” —Lauren Ezersky

Andrew Andrew

What do you think of the Hamptons? “My favorite spot is in the winter in Sweden, going at five in the morning to the sea. You really don’t want to know. It’s really hell. But then you become really strong.” —Marina Abramovic

Tatiana Platt

Have you ever turned down a date? “I had a date with a very wealthy guy and he came in a jalopy car. I said, ‘I think we should be in our Mercedes.’ He wanted me to be okay, but I wasn’t okay with it. Because why should I be?” —Joan Jedell

Andy Spade

What a fantastically textural dress! “Thanks. It's Fendi. I can't keep my hands off myself.” —Fabiola Beracasa

Any tips for beating Hamptons traffic? “Stay off 27. I know all the back roads, but I don’t know the names of any of them. If you want to beat traffic, follow me.” —Kim Raver

Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos

What animal would you videotape for hours? “Chimpanzees are amazing and the orangutans are wild and the gorillas are amazing. I could watch them pick ticks off each other all day.” — Beth Rudin DeWoody

Lisa Perry

Any advice for polygamists? “Get your own room. You’ve got to have a place where you can have a little privacy or you’ll go mad. And get amazing women. I’m just a guy along for the ride. No pun intended.” —Bill Paxton

Debbie Bancroft

Do you have a favorite animal? “I’m fascinated with cats. I’m really interested in Egyptian cats.” —DJ Spooky
