Closing Party for Marina Abramovic’s “The Artist Is Present”

MoMA. June 1, 2010. By Charlotte Cowles

Did you get a chance to sit across from Marina at the exhibit? “Yes, I did. It was, you know, for me a very simple, humanistic moment. I didn’t stay long because I feel like that process is one that really belongs to the people and there was a line behind me.” —Patti Smith

What’s the longest that you could sit still in one place? “I’m not saying my bottom lip wouldn’t quiver. I would smile a lot. But you can take your eyes away, right? I think I could do five minutes.” —Liv Tyler

Christina Ricci

How long do you think you could sit still? “I actually got sent to a Zen Buddhist monastery in Japan when I worked with Shiseido, because they wanted me to learn the art of Zen. You meditate for, like, eight hours a day, and if the monks feel like you’re not concentrating hard enough, then they beat you with a stick!” —Liz Goldwyn

Courtney Love

Michael Stipe

How do you feel? “I’m really running on energy that I have no idea where it came from. I think tomorrow after the Symposia at MoMA, I am going to go to the countryside to hug the trees and get into the rivers. That’s what I need.” —Marina Abramovic

James Franco

Hilary Rhoda

What was it like sitting across from Marina? “I know Marina very well. I came this weekend and I sat down, my heart was beating very strongly, and it was super beautiful and romantic. Marina, she started crying. For me, it’s going to be a moment that I keep forever.” —Riccardo Tisci

Ingrid Sischy
