Book Launch for Francois Nars’s ‘Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself’

Cedar Lake. May 24, 2011. By Bennett Marcus

Do you wear makeup to the gym? “Yes. Well, sometimes I don’t; sometimes I’m all gooped-up. Actually, I was lubed-up this morning, and I just wear, like, a roller set [in my hair] and sunglasses.” What do you mean by ‘gooped’ and ‘lubed’? “Tons and tons and tons and tons of moisturizer. And serums and hocus-pocus and Premarin cream.” —AMANDA LEPORE

FRANCOIS NARS

You’ve worked with Francois Nars for years. Any good stories? “The girls would always fight for Francois to do their makeup, especially during the supermodel time. There’s probably like, 24 makeup artists backstage, but everybody wanted Francois.” Who was the biggest diva about it? “Who do you think?” Naomi? “Ah!” —Anna Sui

GRACE CODDINGTON

What did you think about your Dossier cover that Barnes & Noble insisted be wrapped? “I think the question really isn’t the gender of the person on the cover, it’s whether it’s porn or it’s art. And clearly, I think it’s art, so art really should not be censored in a democratic society.” —ANDREJ PEJIC

ALEXA CHUNG

What are your summer plans? “I’m going to be working and studying in New York until the end of July. I’m in an acting class, almost through my first year at the William Esper Studio. I’m also studying French. Everyone in fashion speaks French, so I think it’s really useful.” —DARIA STROKOUS

CAROL ALT

Do you ever leave the house without makeup? “I like to leave the house with pretend no makeup. I want to give the illusion of leaving the house with no makeup, but in fact I’ve worked very hard for that.” So you’ll always wear something. “Yeah. If I don’t deal with the under-eye situation I feel very badly about myself.” —LAKE BELL (David X Prutting & Neil Rasmus/BFAnyc.com)

BRITT MAREN

Is there something about your appearance that you wish you could change? “Well, I often think it would be fun to be six foot tall, you know. But then I think I wouldn’t be me if I was six foot tall; I would be probably some asshole. So I’m happy to be 5’4”.” —SIMON DOONAN

THOM FILICIA

Do you ever leave the house without makeup? “I do all the time, actually. My mom would be very upset, because I’m from the South, my so mom was always like, ‘Don’t leave home without lip gloss!’ But, no, I do.” —TINSLEY MORTIMER

FERN MALLIS

What’s your daily grooming regimen? “You know, I need a few hours to get ready, but it’s just because I need to watch New York 1 and go on Twitter and, you know, eat a banana. It really only takes me ten minutes to get ready, which is just really to shave, brush my teeth, and take a shower.” —MICKEY BOARDMAN

ERIN FETHERSTON

Do you ever leave the house without makeup? “No, I don’t. From a young age I have never done that. I was brought up by my mother, who is Latin, to just put on a little mascara, even when you go get a croissant or this or that. Put yourself together, you never know who you’re going to run into.” —ZANI GUGELMAN
