Metropolitan Opera’s Gala Premiere of ‘Manon’ Hosted By Yves Saint Laurent
Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center. March 26, 2012. By Jennifer Vineyard
Can you sing?
“Oh, gosh. It’s so funny, because when I’m alone, I love to sing opera. I’m terrible, but I love it. I just find it very therapeutic for me to sing out loud whatever I’m thinking about at the time.”
You’ve got the whole opera ensemble going on!
“This cape is so cozy and so warm. And my gloves, look, they’re flecked with gold.”
Do you sing?
“I can do karaoke. But you don’t want to hear me.”
Are you a soprano?
“I’m a bass.”
What’s your go-to song?
“‘Let Me Go Home.’”
Are you a fan of rock operas?
“No, no, no, no, no, no, no. That’s like 7,000 nos in a row.”
Have you been to the opera before?
“I’m an opera virgin!”
Are you overwhelmed?
“I was actually expecting more.”
Would you ever want to sing an opera?
“I’m not really qualified. I’m not interested in rocking up opera. I like it the way it is. I’m a traditionalist.”
If a director asked you to sing opera or otherwise...
“They would be up the creek without a paddle. By no means can I sing. I’m horrible.”
