Cantina Royal
58 N. 3rd St., nr. Berry St., Williamsburg; 347-763-2938
As anyone who has tasted the tongue tacos at La Superior can attest, Felipe Mendez knows his way around a tortilla. But Mendez’s second Williamsburg dining spot, Cantina Royal, is, above all else, a venue for drinking—not to mention late-night margarita-fueled dancing. Like the best cantinas in the co-owner’s hometown, Mexico City, this one is casual but sophisticated, with a massive chandelier at its entrance, a stacked tequila list, and unhurried service. Cocktails include the Meco Loco ($11)—muddled cucumber, Hendricks gin, and jalapeños—and the peppery mezcal Alipús San Andrés ($12), direct from D.F. via Mendez’s suitcase.
