674 Manhattan Ave., nr. Norman Ave., Greenpoint; 347-457-5448
As Greenpoint marches toward yuppiedom, this straightforward bar seems determined to preserve some of the neighborhood’s low-key appeal. The look is old-world elegant, with exposed brick, silvery wallpaper, and globular light fixtures, plus a gleaming mahogany bar proffering $10 cocktails (try the After the Gold Rush, with chamomile-infused bourbon, honey, lemon, and bitters) and $4 pints of Narragansett Lager. The attitude, however, is thoroughly modern: Groups of scruffy young things are the chief clientele, mingling around tables in front, dancing to D.J.-ed music in the back of the L-shaped room (notable guest spinners include members of MGMT, Das Racist, and Chairlift), or just taking a breather in the bar’s space-doubling, summer-ready backyard.
