When Nancy Chemtob and Susan Moss first met in 1999, it wasn’t on friendly terms—they were on opposite sides of a divorce case. Since 2002, however, they have been partners at Chemtob Moss Forman & Talbert, a matrimonial law firm based in New York City. “We realized we never wanted to go against each other again,” Moss said.

The founding member of the firm, Chemtob comes from a family of lawyers and joked that her decision to become an attorney was “genetic.” She enjoys matrimonial law because even though clients “never wanted to be in this office, when they leave, we’ve turned life around for them.”

Moss went into law because she had, she kidded, a “strange desire to always be talking.” In law school she represented women who were convicted of killing their abusers and was thus inspired to specialize in matrimonial issues.

Although they have an impressive record between them—Chemtob worked on the first same-sex divorce case signed in New York and Moss helped acquit a domestic violence survivor who had been sentenced for murder—they are also particularly proud of their firm as a whole. “We make sure we hire the best and brightest, whether or not there is a job [opening] for them,” Chemtob said.

Moss also explained that the lawyers at Chemtob Moss Forman & Talbert are not only compassionate, but also have a strong understanding of math and finance. “It is easy to misread tax forms and misunderstand what money is available [to clients]” she said. “We can educate clients and even the courts to make our points.”
