Hon. John DiBlasi, former Justice, New York State Supreme Court, holds an AV Preeminent peer rating from Martindale-Hubbell in the fields of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Litigation—a distinction given to those who possess the highest ethical standards and professional ability. In the first quarter of 2010, his total settlements in mediated cases exceeded $24 million. He is proud to be associated exclusively with National Arbitration and Mediation (NAM).
John DiBlasi has thirty years of experience in civil litigation as a jurist and counsel representing plaintiffs and defendants. He possesses a unique understanding of the ADR process, both from the standpoint of an attorney acting as a client advocate, and as a judge who has settled thousands of cases. His practice is now devoted full-time to ADR.
John DiBlasi’s philosophy for successful dispute resolution begins with preparation. Every brief submitted by counsel is carefully reviewed, and advance consideration is given to the positions of the parties. His goal is to create an environment that engenders respect and communication, with an emphasis on civility. While John DiBlasi takes great pride in his high success rate in settling cases at the initial mediation, when that outcome is not achieved, he is dedicated to working with counsel personally to make sure the case is ultimately resolved.
Elected to the Supreme Court of the State of New York at the age of 39, John DiBlasi presided over many complex personal injury actions involving catastrophic injuries. He was also the first Presiding Justice of the Commercial Division of the Supreme Court, Westchester County, where he presided over contracts, employment, real property/land use, and environmental matters, and started the first ADR program used by this Court.
A former Adjunct Professor of Law at Pace University, John DiBlasi is the author of multiple articles concerning trial advocacy published in the New York State Bar Journal. He is a Fellow of the American and New York State Bar Foundations, and a recipient of the New York State Bar Association’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Law Related Education.
