With their respective backgrounds in engineering, biology, and nursing, the attorneys at Gurfein Douglas have the expertise required to communicate to a jury the complex scientific and medical principles that are often characteristic of serious personal injury, medical malpractice, and work- related injury cases.
The firm has a history of significant recoveries, including three recent top results in New York: a bus accident verdict of $6.78 million, a medical malpractice verdict involving ovarian pathology for $2.4 million, and a product liability recovery involving an industrial press brake for $1.1 million. The firm also recently achieved a $7.4 million settlement on behalf of a 60-year-old woman who became paralyzed in both legs and one arm after her doctors failed to diagnose a spinal infection.
The law firm is currently accepting clients in a number of mass tort actions for defective medical devices and drugs, including Actos, a diabetes medicine that causes bladder cancer; Pradxa, an anticoagulation medicine that causes internal bleeding; Fosamax, a drug used to prevent osteoporosis that causes fractures of the femur; Depuy Hip, a metal-on-metal hip replacement that causes chromium poisoning and early failure of the hip; and Transvaginal Mesh Implants, which cause infections that require extensive surgery.
Over the years, the attorneys at Gurfein Douglas have received significant recognition for their representation. Senior partners Richard A. Gurfein and Preston Douglas have both been selected for inclusion in New York Super Lawyers annually since 2007. Gurfein is also past-President of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and is board certified as a civil trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
