Class Actions, Mass Torts, Employment Discrimination, Commercial Litigation, Personal Injury

From Left: David Ratner, Benedict Morelli, Jeremy Alters

This fall, Morelli Ratner broadened its reach by merging with the Alters Law Firm to form Morelli Alters Ratner. The firm has offices in New York and Miami and will be opening another office in Washington, D.C. in 2013. Morelli Alters Ratner will be national in scope, handling litigation from New York to Florida to California, specializing in class action suits along with mass torts, employment discrimination, commercial litigation, serious personal injury and medical malpractice which both firms have been handling separately.

Benedict Morelli founded the original firm in 1998 committed to giving a voice to people who were seriously injured physically, emotionally or financially. “Historically we have advocated for the little person against all odds,” Morelli says, “and we never shy away from a difficult case if we believe it is meritorious.” Morelli, a past president of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® annually since 1995. Since 1977 Morelli has tried every type of civil case with extraordinary results. “Although trying cases is a lost art because our world is based more on mediation and arbitration rather than litigation,” Morelli says, “our firm has been established to handle cases from start to finish. In fact, it is our trial experience that has allowed us to litigate important cases against some of the largest law firms and corporations in the world. The ability to try a case and win gives the defendants an added incentive to settle for a larger amount.”

In 2011, Morelli Ratner secured a $95 million verdict in Illinois for a former employee of a furniture rental company for its failure to respond properly to her complaints of sexual harassment and assault. The verdict is the largest single-plaintiff sexual harassment verdict on record. In 2009, Morelli won the largest vaccine verdict in U.S. history – a $22.5 million award for a man who contracted polio 30 years earlier when changing his daughter’s diaper after she had been given a live oral polio vaccine. Morelli notes, “It is very gratifying when a jury tells a large corporation to mend its ways and clean up its act.”

Just like the Morelli Firm, the Alters Firm’s philosophy has always been to fight relentlessly on behalf of innocent consumers to protect them from predatory practices. Alters efforts in such high profile cases as the checking account overdraft litigation and Chinese Drywall mass tort have resulted in billions of dollars in verdicts and settlement.

In 2012, the Alters’ Firm secured one of the largest class action settlements against Bank of America for $410 million.

Morelli Alters Ratner is currently involved in multiple national class action and mass tort cases. They continue litigation against the DePuy division of Johnson & Johnson for its hip implants, Pfizer for the drugs Chantix and Zoloft, Genentech for the drug Raptiva, and Merck for the drug Propecia, and several medical device manufacturers for injuries sustained by female transvaginal mesh patients. The firm is also involved in multiple class action litigations with L’Oreal, Spray Foam Insulation, and Dial Soap.

The combined talents, resources and resolve of the two firms will provide enormous new opportunities for their prospective clients and for the growth of Morelli Alters Ratner into new practice areas.
