Cheap Beers

As more and more New Yorkers find their 401(k)s going down the drain, an inexpensive way to forget about one’s dreary finances is doubly inviting.

1. The Hog Pit
Not to be confused with its notorious neighbor Hogs & Heifers, the Hog Pit offers all of the down-home atmosphere (stellar country jukebox, great barbecue) minus the mountain of lacy unmentionables and megaphone-slinging bartenders. In other words, you can enjoy your $2 Pabst Blue Ribbon special without worrying that it will get poured on you. (22 Ninth Avenue; 212-604-0092.)

2. Cherry Tavern
Not a thing about this nondescript bar screams, or even whispers, Mexico. But the Tijuana special—a can of Tecate plus an enormous tequila shot for $5—will send you straight to your own private Margaritaville. (441 East 6th Street; 212-777-1448.)

3. Rudy’s Bar and Grill
There is nothing like a $7.75 pitcher of Rudy’s Amber after a long midtown workday, as is evidenced by the multitude of suits cramped into this dingy dive. If the price doesn’t convince you, then the free hot dogs should seal the deal. (627 Ninth Avenue, at 44th Street; 212-974-9169.)

4. Blind Tiger Ale House
Brooklyn Brewery’s excellent Pennant Pale Ale is $3 during Blind Tiger’s Monday special. Also, check out sister bars Spring Lounge (a.k.a. the Shark Bar) and Collins Bar for more of the same. (518 Hudson Street; 212-675-3848.)

5. Corner Bistro
You’ll have to wait in line because the place is so famous for its burgers. But toss back a couple of $2 mugs of McSorley’s, and you won’t really care how long you stand there. (331 West 4th Street; 212-242-9502.)
