The Unbearable Truth

ShareThis

It’s a sure sign an empire has fallen when its leaders start squabbling over children’s toys. British M.P. Gwyneth Dunwoody’s campaign to repatriate the original Pooh has no chance of beating the phalanx of librarians arrayed against her, but it hardly matters. Pooh’s imprisonment in a display case at the New York Public Library is a slight offense compared to the humiliating presence of that beefy imposter Disney parades around. The one who hangs out on the coast, taking meetings with animators, doing lunch with Eisner at the Grill. He’d just as soon forget the humble doll whose name he usurped, or that milquetoast of a sidekick -- Christopher something, wasn’t it? Why does anyone care about that old bear, he wonders between sips of mineral water. But he can’t be bothered; he’s a bear on the go. Just show him the honey.
