Wouldn’t it be cool if dancing around your apartment to your favorite song qualified as a workout? Jamie King, Madonna’s choreographer, has designed a class that’s part Fame—you learn combinations in an eight-count fashion, as in “5, 6, 7, 8!”—and part MTV Beach House, where bopping around to phat beats is an everyday activity. After a warm-up, basic sequences are taught in half-time and then at full speed. At the end of the hour, they’re strung together to form a full routine. The class changes styles every eight weeks—hip-hop-inspired choreography is the current style, samba will be next. Instructor Marc Santa Maria insists rhythm isn’t required: “We’ve got university students and grandmothers,” he says.
