Our Picks
The blaxploitation-lite Bill Cosby–Sidney Poitier collaborations were hardly the greatest films of their era, but fans of Poitier’s more sober performances will enjoy seeing him cut loose for once. In Uptown Saturday Night, Let’s Do It Again, and A Piece of the Action, a relaxed Poitier, who also directed the films, dons some silly polyester suits and hams it up with pals like Ossie Davis, James Earl Jones, Jimmie Walker, and Harry Belafonte. Sure, the classroom comedy A Piece of the Action is as apple-pie wholesome as any of Poitier’s most uplifting films, but the guy wasn’t all soft. After all, the nineties’ most notorious rapper was so impressed with Let’s Do It Again’s swaggering, purple-vested gangster that he stole his name: Biggie Smalls. PG; $19.97 each.
