Happy, Texas is one of those low-budget high-concept comedies in which the concept is none too high -- a pair of escaped convicts (Jeremy Northam and Steve Zahn) from a west Texas chain gang end up impersonating a gay couple who stage junior-miss beauty pageants -- but I would be remiss if I didn't champion the performance of William H. Macy as a forlorn small-town sheriff smitten by one of the escapees. He's immensely touching, which is more than this balderdash deserves.
