Media: Toupéed Tightwad Tycoon Tells All!

It’s just not fair, really – Friday, you’re about to board a French Riviera flight with your much-younger girlfriend; Monday, you’re the Post’s “national champion of deadbeat husbands,” finally busted after skipping the country without a trace in 1995 and leaving your wife of three decades without a penny. But the verbose, wide-eyed, immaculately toupéed Edward Weslock, the Canadian-born former president of Church’s Shoes USA, can explain. Why did he rush his ample assets to Switzerland? To keep his wife, Lesley, from spending any more of his money, of course. “She bought so much stuff, we had boxes under the bed she never even opened,” he rails at a friend’s East Side apartment, one day after getting out of jail for nonpayment of $42,000 in support. “She was a spendaholic and an alcoholic! We’d go out to dinner and she’d drink two bottles of wine!” He insists New York State shouldn’t even have jurisdiction over his divorce – “They say I owe money because they couldn’t reach me, but is that a reason?” – and freely admits that his tax-free exile in Monaco was a ploy to get Lesley to settle. Lesley’s lawyer, Irvin Rosenthal, calls Weslock’s jurisdiction gambit “ludicrous” and the spending and boozing claims “irrelevant.” But after getting Posted all last week, even the deadbeat in question had to admit his story is a good read. “I love my wife, let me put it that way,” he says. “That’s your quote – in big block letters.”
