Remembering Amy Spindler

ShareThis

At the April 25 memorial service for Amy Spindler, style editor of the New York Times Magazine—attended by such style icons as Karl Lagerfeld, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Helmut Lang, and Anna Wintour—Interview editor Ingrid Sischy read a story she’d published by Spindler about being at a fashion show. Or rather, a story, from the magazine’s September 2000 issue, written by Cliché Spindler-Benabib—the pinscher that belonged to Spindler and her husband, Roberto Benabib.

When’s it gonna start?
When’s it gonna start?
When’s it gonna start?
This editor next to me smells good. I love Europeans.
When’s it gonna start?
When’s it gonna start?
When’s it gonna start?
This show’s already an hour late.
Seven hours in dog years.
When’s it gonna start?
When’s it gonna start?
When’s it gonna start?
Finally!
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
Ouch! Britney Spears at fifty decibels. Guess I’m the only one here with ears.
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
That model had a boob job. I was gonna have a boob job. But with the eight nipples it’s a bit pricey.
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
The leather coat smells nice.
But how does it taste?
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
That dress smells like Marlboros, vodka, and aftershave. No wonder the show was late.
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
That model’s skinny. She must not like her food.
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
Ouch! Guess I’m not the only one in the room who’s color-blind.
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
When’s it gonna end?
It’s over! That was not his best-smelling stuff.
Where’s my driver?
Where’s my driver?
Where’s my driver?
Stop pushing. Where’d you grow up, a puppy mill?
Where’s my driver?
Where’s my driver?
Where’s my driver?
Screw it, I have to pee anyway. I’ll walk.
