Q: I like those monogrammed jeans Madonna wears in the Gap’s ad campaign—who can stitch my initials on my back pocket?
A: Not since sleepaway camp have so many fashionistas put their names and initials onto their clothing. The Material Mom and Missy Elliott have shown off their well-publicized M’s, and J.Lo recently sported a pink JEN on her Juicy Couture caftan. To get the same star quality, check out Captions Custom Embroidery (153 East 53rd Street, first floor kiosk; 212-750-7629). Owner Lisa Smith stitches partygoers’ frocks at on-location events for both companies. “The whole trend with initialed tops has been huge,” she says. But Smith doesn’t stop there. “We can do literally anything—shirts, jeans, blankets, towels. We do a lot of underwear.” If you really want to express yourself, she can embroider a favorite saying or you can pick any image, from a microphone to a bucking bronco, out of her books of 15,000 colorful graphics. Prices start at $10, and timing varies from while-you-wait to overnight.
