The Best Bet
Bob Mackie made his name translating glittery, feathery, skin-baring Vegas-showgirl attire into Hollywood red-carpet wear. Cher was his most famous muse, but not all his designs were of the sheer and shameless variety; in fact, a surprising number of the pieces from Mackie’s own archives that will be auctioned on November 22 at Christie’s are elegantly simple enough to pass muster at this season’s charity galas. This ostrich-and-pheasant-feather mask, however, demands a special occasion all its own (estimated at $1,200 to $1,500; 20 Rockefeller Plaza, nr. Sixth Ave.; 212-636-2000).
