My trusty digital camera recently died, conveniently right before a big trip to Texas. So I went to B&H, fully expecting to pay anywhere from $500-$700 for a camera that would do everything I wanted it to do. Surprise, surprise—I was directed to the Canon PowerShot A95, a 5 mega pixel camera with swivel viewfinder (you don’t realize how incredibly useful this is until you have one), the ability to add on lenses (!) and run on four AA batteries (rechargeable or not, your choice). Here’s the best part—it costs less than $300. Please note: it's compact, but not a super-small, incredibly light, fit-in-your-pocket camera. It does take great pictures, though, and is, in my humble opinion after test driving for three weeks, a huge bargain considering all it delivers.
$269.95 at B&H Photo-Video, 420 Ninth Ave., at 34th St., 800-606-6969; bhphotovideo.com.
