Remember when Samantha on Sex and the City said, “for single women, candles are the new cats”? Ever since then, I’ve been terrified of candles. Curing my phobia is this new White Pepper version from Henri Bendel. With notes of lily and nutmeg mixed in with a sharp, spicy smell, the candle makes a room smell awake, not perfumed. It gives off a hazy white light, looks inconspicuous on a night table, and—unlike cats or floral scented candles—hasn’t scared off a man yet. At least, not in my apartment…
$26 at Henri Bendel, 712 Fifth Ave., near 56th St., 212-247-1100; henribendel.com.
