If you've tried stuffing the morning paper into your cute little handbag, you know it requires the folding techniques of an origami master. But that doesn't mean you need to juggle your coffee, Metrocard, and reading material in the name of fashion. Instead, invest in a trusty tote to use in conjunction with your everyday bag -- one that's as practical as that dusty old PBS number in your closet, but a lot more stylish.
Cheerful and roomy, Banana Republic's corduroy tote ($48) is the only bag you'll need to transport all your daily necessities. Throw in an extra-large bottle of water -- it can handle it.
The ultracute Nolita boutique Hiponica has a sturdy, feminine version ($45) in faded brown with leather handles (it also comes in olive or red).
Don't think H&M is just for trendy things: The Swedish chain comes through with a roomy, rectangular tote you'll use for years ($9).
And finally, our favorite of all: Fossil's ladylike black wool Ophelia satchel ($48 at Macy's) goes with everything, fits everything, and even we will probably never get sick of it.
