Expert Testimony: The Inside Story

Has the cold weather turned your apartment into a round-the-clock romper room? When the very sight of Tonka trucks and Franklin the Turtle is too much to bear, strap on the Wellies and let a professional do the entertaining. Chris Raschka – a Caldecott Honor-winning children’s-book illustrator, collaborator on the critically acclaimed book Fishing in the Air, and fellow urban parent – takes his 5 and 1/2-year-old son to book readings at the Drawing Center (35 Wooster Street; 212-219-2166), a SoHo art gallery. “It’s a nice, big space where kids get to interact with art, puppets, and objects,” Raschka says. Admission is free (but the schedule varies, so make sure you call ahead) and the author-led readings mix in performance and visuals to ensure that the kids enjoy the readings at least as much as the latest VeggieTales video.
