There's something a bit paradoxical about auto racing in New York. We are genetically predisposed to be wary of automobile ownership at all -- driving cars for sport strikes many of us as positively ludicrous (this is reinforced by the fact that traffic conditions ensure that few New Yorkers actually see one move faster than 30 miles per hour) -- yet the metropolitan area is home to some of the best vintage and amateur-racing events around. We asked David E. Davis Jr., editor of Automobile magazine, for his favorite. "The Labor Day weekend Dodge Vintage Festival at Lime Rock Park Lakeville, Connecticut; 860-435-5000 is an absolutely terrific vintage-car event." He's also a fan of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) races that run throughout the summer. Now, if you could just figure out a way to drive there . . .
