Although The Baggot Inn is your standard wood-paneled, two-room Irish pub with live music in the back, it's at least 75% classier—the bar actually serves a great dirty martini. Still, the vibe remains more old school Bleecker Bob's than nouveau chic Senor Swanky's. Ambition, be it thwarted or in full flower, is on view nightly at this Greenwich Village haunt's musical showcases. Aging hippies, stand-up comedians from the Boston Comedy Club upstairs and the post-work crowd pay a tiny cover ($5 tops) to mingle around the well-stocked bar, with cheap, stiff drinks and $9 pitchers before 7pm when the place is still relatively quiet. Once well-lubricated, revelers move to the spacious back room (where attentive servers keep the drinks coming) to size up the acts onstage—often striving young solo rockers early in the evening and more weathered folk bands later on. Sunday is when the acoustic musicians drift back and forth from the bar to Washington Square Park as part of their weekly rite: singing as many choruses of "Proud Mary" as they can before the acid flashbacks get too intense.
